Nancy’s Look

Sun is shining, the weather is sweet… and as much as we’d all rather be moving our dancing feet, some of us gotta go to work! Thankfully, this season allows us to do so in style.

ND IMG_9246

Summer to me is synonymous with color, color and more color. That’s why I had to work this skirt into my office chic look. I have made full use of it for play time but now it’s just what I needed to werk it at work. The scuba material gives this pencil skirt the best fit.

ND IMG_9265

To remain sexy and cool, I paired my skirt with a lace top. To wear lace at work or not to wear lace at work, that is the question! It all depends on your work environment. Mine is not the most conservative, but nonetheless, I always make sure that I wear it with a tank top that provides full coverage. The goal is always to look professional and classy while being comfortably you. Just rock whatever outfit will make you walk tall like you own the joint (even if you don’t actually own it… yet!).

ND IMG_9563

Since it’s summertime, I try to wear pieces that can easily take me from the boardroom to the bar. So swap your pumps for some lace up sandals, add some bling around your neck and enjoy that cocktail!

It’s 7:30 AM, it’s already 25 degrees out and you’re getting ready to head out to the office, but first, you gotta figure out what to wear! This task can be daunting, especially when you can’t just throw on shorts and a tee. My solution to the summer heat + work outfit dilemma is the flared skirt.

LT IMG_9071

For me, a flared skirt equals great ventilation!lol I need the air to flow around me to keep me cool and I love that feeling of freedom (no pants restricting my movements.

LT IMG_9095

This look was super-dooper simple. I went for a tone on tone mix rocking this purple pleather, sleevless top and a mauve flared midi skirt. The shoes I kept neutral and then threw on some cool accessories to jazz things up a little. This look also transitions extremely well into an after work happy hour event or a nice dinner out!

So bring on the heat, cause I got it beat baby!

As the temperature rises, maintaining that polished professional look can sometimes leave you wondering what to wear to work.  As you make your way to the office, it might be humid and sticky but once you arrive it’s as though you’ve been dropped in a freezer because the air conditioning is cranked all the way up to Antarctica temperatures!  To combat these two extreme scenarios I make sure to have layering pieces in my wardrobe.

GT Edited IMG_9698

For this summer office chic look I went with this 3/4 length jacket to guard me against the frigid ac temp.  Although this jacket is a feminine pink colour, it’s very tailored and sleek.

GT Edited IMG_9713

I then paired my jacket with this cotton (read breathable) dusty rose coloured tank and a cream coloured pencil skirt.  Both of these pieces work to keep me looking business chic but cool and comfy for those commutes to and from work via public transit.

To complete my look I added blushed coloured pumps (worn only at the office and NOT durig my commute as I wouldn’t survive LOL) and the tote purse to hold all my much needed items.  And voila, summer office chic at its best!

The office chic look is right up my alley. When summer comes around I’m ready to show up to show off.   For me an office chic look is when classic professional meets stylish fashionista. Some of my favorite office looks are dresses, pants and printed shirts. Having these essential items can easily allow you to transition from a day at the office to happy hour. Let me introduce you to my office chic look.

JS IMG_8638

For this look I went for my 3/4 olive high-waisted pants from ASOS . These pants are perfection, love how they hug my body. A high waist is just what I need to show off my hourglass figure. I don’t have to deal with the usual gap at the back when I sit, and the built in belt is just perfect. I have been looking for pants like this for a very long time so when I saw them online I couldn’t resist buying them, and I’m hopeful they’ll come out in many colors so I can purchase them all!

JS IMG_8816

Since we can now finally enjoy the nice weather, I decided to wear my high waist pants with a sleeveless high collar shirt. This shirt goes well with almost anything and I can easily put a sweater or simple jacket over it, and I’m good to go.

JS IMG_8761

To complete my cute office chic look, I paired my outfit with leopard print pumps by Sam Edelman, and just like that I’m ready to handle business at work than enjoy a nice cocktail at a cute spot for happy hour.

Holiday season got you feeling blue whenever you think about what to wear to all those festive events? Well, the ladies of Fab Four Fashion have teamed up with Alloy Apparel & Accessories to showcase some amazing looks to help get you in a more festive mood. Looks full of sparkle and lace, sequins and shine and a whole lot of fire to heat up your holiday! Alloy Apparel & Accessories has a wide collection of pieces for straight and plus size, as well as pieces for those at the taller end of the height spectrum which can fit into your wardrobe for work and play.

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, Jack Frost nipping at your nose… It’s that time of year again, when the holiday party invitations start rolling in and we ladies run to our closets to find that special something that will put us in a festive mood.

gt IMG_7013

This gorgeous lace dress from Alloy Apparel’s plus size line hits all the right notes.  With its short sleeves and figure hugging silhouette, it’s perfect for that office Christmas party.  Moreover, the length of this dress is spot on for me given I’m on the short side of the height spectrum.  This lovely lace dress also has a little stretch to it as well so it really does hug ones figure wonderfully.

gt IMG_6940

gt IMG_6896

I love the partial open back detail found on the back of the dress so one can show just a bit more skin without being too revealing.  I paired a black moto style jacket with this dress to toughen up the look a bit.  Now I’m ready to sip eggnog and dance the night away!

With the Holiday season fast approaching, trying to find the perfect holiday outfit to hit those parties in style can be daunting for some. Well we’ve joined forces with Alloy Apparel to showcase a few pieces from their holiday collection, that will make everyone believe you are the Obi-Wan Kenobi of holiday fashion finds!

I’m the type of gal that likes to live on a glam high all year long, and this holiday season is no exception.  My look was all about GLAMOUR, lookking FABULOUS and being BOLD! I present to you Cookie Lyons younger sister, Chanel Lyons (for those who watch Empire I know you get me LMAO). While browsing through the Alloy Apparel website I found this lovely sequins champagne wrap dress. The dress is fully lined with a hemline ending just above the knee. The great thing about Alloy is that they cater to all sizes and you can find most items in straight, tall and plus sizes, and you know Fab Four Fashion loves companies that understand that fashion is for all.

js IMG_7259

One thing I must say, I selected my dress size based on the size chart and was surprised to find that when it arrived I had quite a bit of room to spare.  Therefore one can conclude that for this particular item, Alloy is very generous with their sizing. Works for me, cause I’d rather my dress have a little extra room than be too tight. This is an easy fix, the solution, my fave person, my tailor and voila, problem solved. Alternatively, you can always order a size smaller and with the stretchy material you will be fine.  This dress is gorgeous, a total show stopper and will definitely be a hit during the holiday season.  My tall and plus size babes can all dive into this sassy little number too!

js IMG_7400

To complete my Cookie Lyons’ inspired look, LOL, I chose to wear a spotted faux fur leopard print coat which is simply the business and perfect to wear on those cold winter nights. It’s big and its bold and most importantly it’s warm. To finish off my look I paired the dress with my blush patent pumps and long dangly earrings, and of course, my signature red lipstick muah!!!! Here she is the latest cast member of Empire: Cookie’s younger sister CHANEL LYONS!

For the past couple of weeks, all attention has been on what to wear to parties and rocking the best and fiercest freakum dress. Well what about those dinners with friends, or that get together with family that doesn’t need to be too formal? If you need an outfit for those occasions and your mom’s been begging you to put those jeans away, well here is a great alternative.

nd IMG_7669

This is probably coming to you as no surprise, I went with a sequin number! lol These pants are awesome: simple black jeans in the back and sequins in the front! The jeans half have just the right amount of stretch to ensure great comfort while the front says BAM! Here I am! lol The pants come in 32″ and 37″ inseam which is the perfect length for us long legged ladies. The sizing worked perfectly for me, I consulted the size chart and went with the size closest to my measurements. They have a snug fit but don’t dig in – none of that dreaded muffin top here!

nd IMG_7578

Wanting to mix my materials, I paired my pants with Alloy’s Caroline Lace Zip Back Blouse. I wanted my look to be more on the sassy side so underneath my lace top I wore a tube top with a sweetheart neckline. If you prefer more coverage, you can easily wear the top with a camisole. It has an interesting back, boasting an exposed zipper and fly away back detail. This is another piece that will get many wears in many different settings.

Thanks to the good folks at Alloy Apparel, you now have a great option for those informal affairs where you still want to dazzle!

Leslie’s Look

The holiday season is upon us, and I for one have already been making merry at a few holiday shindigs so far! I’ve done the requisite work lunch with the colleagues, the after work dinner with friends (thanks Erum for organizing) and that oh so necessary ugly sweater party (Efua and Chris great party)!  But you always need to have a sexy little number to wear out for that special holiday event. Whether it be that fancy holiday party your significant other invited you to, or heading out to the club for a night out to shake what your mama gave you, you need to have a special piece in your holiday clothing arsenal to fit the bill. This dress, courtesy of Alloy Apparel & Accessories is my not so secret weapon.

LT IMG_6292 re edited

This dress has all the sparkle a girl could ask for without being over the top, with the elegant colour combination of black and gold to lend that air of sophistication. This is a great piece because it is so versatile. Let me tell you how I plan to rock it now, and how I plan to remix it for the future.

So first of all, I’m rocking this dress backwards, yes, backwards. For those of us ladies with a very small bust-line, we often don’t want to wear garments that draws attention to our lack of large “lady lumps”. LOL  As such, wearing this dress with the front, to the back, raises the neckline, while adding a little exposure at the back.

LT IMG_6633

The long slit on the side adds just the right amount of subtle sexiness to the dress to give people a little peep without giving away the whole show, and showing off those long gams. Now for how to keep this dress fresh and new for future events. First, I just know this dress would work fabulously as a mini! After a few wears, I plan to take it on a little trip to the tailor to take the length, up, up, up! For women on the taller side this would be an awesome option for you if the maxi length just doesn’t hit the mark.

LT IMG_6618 re edited

Second wardrobe remix I plan to do with this dress is rock it as a top! A hot leather black pencil skirt would look phenominal withthis dress (a.k.a. top). The lesson here is to think outside the box when it comes to your wardrobe pieces.

One last tip ladies, if you decide this sexy number must come home with you, try going down one size. I’m actually wearing one size smaller than my actual size and it’s just a tiny bit big, but nothing that a tiny nip and tuck won’t fix. Take your measurements, consult the size guide and go one down a size with this one.

Now I’m ready to hit the next holiday bash! I love this time of year and I’m soaking it all in: the fashion, the fun and the festive hum in the air…cause its the most wonderful time of the year!

How to Successfully Shop Online

shop feat

shop 2

As a tall woman, a lot of my shopping has to be done online. I realized how extensive my online shopping was when I realized that I remembered my credit card number by heart. *Insert wide eyed emoji* As the online retail industry continues to grow, more and more of us are shopping on the World Wide Web. We find cool sites, fall in love with pieces, quickly order… only to be disappointed when the items comes. And then, to add insult to injury, in some cases, we have to dish out more cash to return the item. Dreadful!

Here are some tips that I learned along the way which can help us become more successful with online shopping.

⦁ Know your measurement!

Using a measuring tape is essential. Knowing you’re a size X is not enough as your size may differ from one retailer to another. Be sure to consult the size charts to order the right size. When in doubt, order a size up and have the item tailored. Tailoring adds to the cost but it also insures that it fits perfectly.

⦁ Know your fabrics.

Judging an article from your computer screen may sometimes be tricky. To be sure of what you’re getting, read the info and care section. For example, a garment that is 100% polyester doesn’t typically have much (of a) stretch. When the fabric is described as a composition of multiple materials, I try to go through my closet to look at the tags to see which items come close to the item I’m looking to buy.

⦁ Try it on!

For the long legged women out there, some retailers like Gap, Ann Taylor and Banana Republic have a Tall collection online. To have a better idea of size and fit, go to the store and try one the “regular” size and if satisfied with the piece, order it in the “tall” size!

⦁ Read the reviews!

Is it true to size? Does it run small? Leverage from others’ experience! If most people complained that the dress you’re eyeing runs small, you might want to go a size up.

⦁ Review before ordering!

Before you confirm your order, make sure to review the return policy, shipping information and term and conditions! I know, I know, sometimes we get so excited and quickly confirm orders before reading all the t&c. Not all retailers offer full refund, so unless you’re 100% sure of your purchase, slow down and make sure that you’ll be getting what you’re hoping!

As a last note, I tend to stick to recognized retailers, but if you fall in love with a lesser known online boutique, make sure to do your research to make sure you’re not being scammed. Many of this smaller shops offer great quality product, but we tend to be reluctant to purchasing their goods because of some of the bad apples out there. Try to find reviews and comments from previous customers.

Simply Basquiat

Group Ago Edited IMG_4598 Remix

Forget the call of the wild! The inescapable call of the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) was too alluring to the ladies of Fab Four Fashion this week. We were awed by the thought provoking, expressive work of painter Jean-Michel Basquiat. His large scale pieces held us enthralled, as did the beautiful lines and winding contours of the architecture of the gallery.  I mean really, who could ask for a better backdrop for our looks this week than the AGO!

Leslie’s Look

I was inspired by menswear lines like Comme des Garcons or Klaxon Howl when putting my look together. As I find myself continually explaining to my sister Gail (yup, the same fine full figured femme fetal whom you know and love from this very blog), I’ve got to get dressed based on my mood.

L - B IMG_5128 Ago Edited

The Jean-Michel Basquiat exhibition at the AGO put me in the mood to play with layering print and experimenting with more masculine lines.

L - IMG_5145 Ago Edited

For this outfit I wanted a loose, relaxed look and feel that seems to often go hand-in-hand with men’s wear. I could be wrong, but no matter what they’re wearing unless it’s a tux, guys usually look comfortable.

L - IMG_5175 Ago Edited

This look was all about the layering. I decided to go with pieces that were all in the same colour family which is atypical for me. A crisp white shirt and taupe pants formed the base of this look and I proceeded to layer on a leopard print top (which is actually a dress), a brown leather jacket and a check print car coat.  My t-strap shoes, which I consider my modern-day version of spats, paired with subtly printed socks rounded out the look adding a certain retro feel!

Nancy’s Look

One of the many words that come to my mind when I think of Basquiat’s work is funky. As such, I decided to up the “funk factor” of my outfit just a smidge.

I was immediately drawn to this furry sleeve sweater number which I scored at Zara. As my fellow long legged (and arms!) ladies know, when I tried the sweater on, I was certain that the sleeves would be too short and wondered if it would still look nice with the sleeves scrunched up. Well to my surprise, the sleeve length worked! Which lead to a happy dance and a quick dash to the cash.

Speaking of appropriate length, let’s talk about these trouser jeans from Alloy Apparel! Again, Alloy Apparel understands that our bodies come in all shapes and sizes: these jeans go from size 1 to 25 and 30″ inseam to 39″! To err on the side of caution (or was it just because it was available), I ordered the 39″ inseam. For the very first time in my life, I had jeans that were too long! And yes, that warranted a little dance as well 🙂

I decided to keep my outfit in fifty shades of blue! Ok, there are only about five shades… I finished my look with my favorite cobalt blue pumps and shoulder bag in a similar shade.

I have a bit of a handbag obsession….ok, it’s a big obsession.  Basically what I’m saying is that my outfit was centered around this fringed creation.

After the handbag came this white faux leather moto style jacket.  I love the road warrior feel I get when I wear it.
